The PDF of engine numbers had commas and spaces in its filename... this played havoc with some browsers ( breaking up URLs etc) and lead to quite a few 404s, so the file has been renamed and a link to it added to the 404 page Spent all my time trying to get rid of the 404 errors from call to the 2 old sites and F**king webcrawlers trying to view their idea of what the IME looks like!!! Hits for 2003
I will compare this chart of hits and page views with NEXT YEARS to see how much of this is seasonal and how much was logged 404s!!! The hit counter worked onthe 404 page sadly so artificially boosed hit numbers. What might also be at play is the seasonality of Mini maintenance as not all mininuts have covered workspace. The legacy of bad links and redirection tothe new site should have sorted itself out now, though I still get a lot of 404s logged from the webcrawlers (example below): Sat Jan 3 2004 4:53:00 pm GMT |

Added PHP script to new 404 page to email me when the 404 onthe sever is tripped: within 3 hours revealed: 1) A bad CSS reference in the indexer pages 2) The fact robots.txt is in UPPERCASE and the search engines look for robots.txt 3) The fact Microsoft Internet Explorer looks for a file favicon.ico to load an icon for when pages are bookmarked and gives a 404 if it doesn't find one!!!! 4) The fact that Microsoft browsers go and check to see if a site is webconference enabled and trips a 404 when it fails to find a file to run it ;) AND some viruses try to access stuff too (sent these calls into a blackhole to save my 404 log) Will eliminate more as the visitors find them!!! |

Upgraded to run on BFormMail ( A flavour of FormMail) which is free, allows embedded JavaScript in the forms to generate extra info in the forms (like combining the email address and name of the poster in the subject line, and giving return links 2 steps back) BUT needs to be set up properly to restrict RECIPIENTS otherwise spoofed IPs will open the script up to abuse: FormMail is not to be reccomended as it has too many security holes Article updated in reponse to feedback, in-car replacement of primary gear oil seal

exclude regexp ^.*\?.*$ failed to prevent the directory listing URL ENTRYPOINTS Specify extra URLs where your site may be entered in addition to your main Web site address. For the I.M.E. I use http://www.ime.org.uk/ime/a/ noindex As the primary Entry Point then..... http://www.ime.org.uk/ime/b/ noindex etc etc..... http://www.ime.org.uk/ime/z/ noindex As secondary ones........ This prevents the search even touching the parent directory AND the noindex filters finally prevented the automatic server delivered indexes from being indexed!!! The I.M.E. Relies on the .htaccess file setting directory listing on so the engine finds all the pages in each letter directory!!!!! I did find out about HEADER.html and README.html being displayed if present by the server compared to the existing server generated display using the defaults..!!! There is now an Atomz Yahoo! .........the FREE ATOMZ search engine falls over after spidering 500 pages and the spider went off to the US post office website after 200 on site when it found an external URL on the brake_dot page !!!! this URL masking ALSO makes sure the server generated indexes essential for the spidering of the IME do not feature in the listings... the entry point is set at the articles (..IME/ime/) directory so it misses the contents of the root directory entirely It took Atomz only 2 minutes to crawl 234 pages and index 234 pages containing 122776 words for a total of 4237635 bytes. 15520 word endings, 0 synonyms, 11496 sound-alike words, and 0 excluded words were included in the index. !!! WOW#2 Added the IME and IME URL Masks into the spidering on FBR |
