Straight cut gears have teeth cut straight across the gear edge (perpendicular to the gear disc).
Normal gearboxes use helical gear teeth which are cut at an angle. This is done to make them quieter, as straight cut gears are very loud. Helical gears are less efficient though and zap quite a lot of power so racers don't tend to use them.
